The History and Evolution of the Kathmandu District Cricket Association of Nepal

Cricket has been played in Nepal since the early 1900s, with the sport being introduced by the British during their colonial rule. However, it was not until the formation of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) in 1981 that the game truly began to grow in popularity within the country. The CAN was initially made up of only five districts, with Kathmandu being one of them. In the early years, the association faced many challenges, including a lack of funding and infrastructure, which hindered the development of cricket in the district.

Despite these obstacles, the Kathmandu District Cricket Association continued to work tirelessly to promote and develop the sport. They organized various local tournaments and training programs, as well as sent teams to participate in national and international competitions. In 1994, they were able to secure funds from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to construct the cricket ground in Mulpani, which became the first official cricket ground in the country.

Over the years, the Kathmandu District Cricket Association has played a crucial role in the growth and success of Nepali cricket. They have not only produced some of the country’s best players, but also played a significant role in bringing international recognition to Nepali cricket. Today, the association has expanded to include over 30 districts and continues to work towards developing and promoting the sport at all levels.
